Armyworm Watch for Ellis County Lawns: How to Spot Damage Before You Lose the Yard Overnight
Armyworm Watch for Ellis County Lawns
How to Spot Damage Before You Lose the Yard Overnight
TW Lawn Care ⢠July 2026 ⢠Midlothian, TX
Armyworms move through Ellis County Bermuda lawns in waves from mid July through September. A full population can strip a quarter acre of turf to bare stems in 48 hours. The fix is fast if you catch it early. The damage compounds fast if you do not.
Why Armyworm Calls Are the Most Stressful of July

They follow a predictable script. The lawn looked fine on Saturday morning. By Monday afternoon, large patches were chewed down to brown stubble. By Tuesday, the patches had doubled. The good news is that armyworm outbreaks respond to treatment quickly when caught early. The bad news is that early in armyworm terms means within about 48 hours of first damage. This post is a field guide for what armyworms actually look like on a North Texas Bermuda lawn, the diagnostic tests you can do this evening in your own yard, and what we apply when we are called out for an active outbreak in Midlothian, Waxahachie, Red Oak, or anywhere else in Ellis County.
What Armyworms Are and Why They Move Through So Fast
Origin
The fall armyworm is a moth larva that migrates up from Mexico and South Texas each year. Adult moths lay egg masses on leaf undersides and larvae hatch and begin feeding immediately.
Scale
A single egg mass can produce 200 caterpillars. A heavy infestation puts 20 to 40 larvae per square foot of lawn ā enough to strip a quarter acre in 48 hours.
The Speed Explained
Each larva eats 80% of its lifetime food in the last 2ā3 days before pupating. That is why damage looks like it appeared overnight ā it has been quietly building, then accelerates at the final instar stage.
The Six Early Signs We Look For
Walk your yard this evening. These are the signals that confirm armyworm activity before visible damage becomes severe.
1. Birds Gathering in the Lawn
Mockingbirds, grackles, starlings, and brown thrashers know what armyworms taste like before homeowners do. Five or more birds pecking a single section is often a full day ahead of visible turf damage.
2. Patches That Grow Visibly
First damage looks like circular pale patches. The mistake is assuming drought and increasing irrigation. Walk back two hours later ā if the patch is visibly larger, that is not drought. Drought does not move that fast.
3. Frass on the Canopy
Frass is caterpillar waste. It looks like fine sawdust or small green pellets on the leaf blades. Pull the grass back and look at the soil surface near a suspect patch for grainy debris.
4. Larvae Visible Under the Canopy
At dawn and dusk they feed at the canopy top. During the hot midday, they retreat to the soil. Look for ~1 inch larvae with pale green to dark gray bodies, three thin yellow stripes, and an inverted Y mark on the head.
5. Soap Flush Test
Mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap with 2 gallons of water and pour over one square yard. Wait 3ā5 minutes. More than 5 larvae = confirmed treatment threshold. 20+ per square yard = same-day treatment needed.
6. Chewed Blade Edges
Pull blades from the edge of a suspect patch and look closely. Armyworm feeding leaves jagged, irregular notches in the leaf margins ā not the clean cuts a mower makes. Heavy feeding strips the leaf back to the midrib.
What Treatment Looks Like
We use one of three product families for confirmed armyworm outbreaks, selected based on infestation severity and the property's pet and pollinator considerations. Application is always made in the late afternoon or early evening when larvae are about to feed.
Spinosad
A biological-origin insecticide targeting caterpillars with limited impact on beneficial insects. Effective within 24ā48 hours. Our first choice for residential properties with kids and pets due to its favorable safety profile.
Bifenthrin
A synthetic pyrethroid that works fast with residual control for several weeks. Effective within 12ā24 hours. Used on heavy infestations past 5 larvae per square foot. Requires drying time before pet and child re-entry.
Chlorantraniliprole (Acelepryn)
A longer residual product effective within 48ā72 hours but providing 60ā90 days of suppression. Used as a preventative when outbreaks are sweeping the county or on properties with multiple waves in a season.
How Fast Recovery Happens
Bermuda has impressive recovery capacity. Once the population is controlled, an active healthy lawn often shows visible new growth within 7ā10 days and looks substantially recovered within 3ā4 weeks.
Keys to Recovery
Stop the feeding immediately. Water normally through recovery. Avoid low mowing or heavy fertilizer during the first two weeks. A healthy lawn entering armyworm season bounces back fast.
When Recovery Slows
Lawns weakened by compaction, hydrophobic soil, or existing chinch bug damage recover more slowly. Stressed zones may stay thin into August while unaffected zones green up. This is why July diagnostics matter so much.
What Does NOT Work
Watering
Has no effect on armyworm populations. Heavy irrigation can actually make the canopy more attractive for egg-laying moths.
Generic Hardware Store Insecticide
Some labeled products work, but many do not list armyworms specifically. If armyworms are not on the label, the product is not formulated for what you need.
Waiting and Watching
By the time damage doubles, the population has more than doubled because larvae are growing larger and eating more. Every day of waiting compounds the damage.
Mowing the Affected Area Short
Makes the problem worse by exposing the crowns and removing the canopy the lawn needs to recover. Continue your normal mowing schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Armyworms vs. Chinch Bugs?
Chinch bugs damage hot, dry, sunny edges along hardscape. Armyworms damage the interior of irrigated lawns. The soap flush test confirms armyworms; the float test confirms chinch bugs.
Do Armyworms Kill the Lawn?
They feed on leaf tissue, not roots or crowns. Bermuda usually recovers from even heavy damage once the population is controlled. St. Augustine recovers more slowly.
When Do They Stop?
Activity tapers as overnight temperatures drop into the 60s consistently. In Ellis County, that is typically mid to late October. Until then, multiple waves are possible.
Should Neighbors Coordinate Treatment?
Yes if possible. Adult moths fly across property lines. Treating one yard while three neighbors have active infestations gives you a brief reprieve, not a long-term fix.
Will Treatment Hurt My Dog?
All three products we use are safe for pets after the spray has dried. We recommend keeping pets off the treated area for two hours. For very sensitive pets, spinosad has the best safety profile.
What to Do Next
If you have any of the six signs, do the soap flush test this evening. Two tablespoons of dish soap, two gallons of water, one square yard of suspected lawn. The result in five minutes tells you whether you need same-day treatment.
We serve Midlothian, Waxahachie, Red Oak, Cedar Hill, and surrounding Ellis County. Armyworm response is one of the few July calls where a same-week appointment makes a meaningful difference in the outcome.
